Coconut oil is one of the healthiest superfoods in the world. It is full of antioxidants and healthy fatty acids, like caprylic acid, lauric acid
and capric acid.
Unlike the long-chain fatty acids found in most plant oils, coconut oil contains healthy fats called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). These healthy fats provide the perfect source of energy and are one of the most beneficial fats available to us. They are also:
Easy to digest
Not readily stored as fat
Processed by the liver, immediately converted to energy
Coconut oil is commonly used in tropical countries where the coconut is abundant, but it is quickly becoming a staple in Western countries, like the United States and Canada. Wondering why this tasty oil is gaining so much momentum? Here are a few amazing benefits of coconut oil that will have you running to the supermarket.
*For the best results, use an organic, unrefined, cold-pressed, extra-virgin coconut oil
1. Healthy Skin
The MCFAs in coconut oil are natural conditioners, penetrating deep and moisturizing the skin. They also protect against environmental toxins that cause oxidative damage and speed up the aging process. Aside from reducing the appearance of wrinkles and cellulite, coconut oil soothes eczema and provides protection from the sun.
2. Weight Loss
Coconut oil is quickly and easily converted into energy, aiding the body in burning fat and calories, especially that stubborn belly fat. It is a no-carb oil that actually promotes satiety and suppresses appetite. The MCFAs in coconut oil even help the body build muscle, boosting your metabolism and burning more calories throughout the day. But, make sure you’re using the real deal. Coconut oil supplements contain processed forms of MCFAs that aren’t as effective.
3. Improved Digestion
The MCFAs in coconut oil are so small, that they are easily digested by the body. They cause less strain on the pancreas and the gut as they do not need pancreatic enzymes to be broken down. They are so easy for the body to digest, that they even improve symptoms of gallbladder attack. If that isn’t enough to convince you, coconut oil even improves leaky gut syndrome. It improves growth and persistence of good bacteria, destroying bad bacteria and fungal overgrowth in the gut. This means improvement in bloating, constipation, stomach ulcers, Chron’s and ulcerative colitis.
4. Strong & Shiny Hair
For women in tropical countries, this oil is used on a daily basis to deep condition the hair. Coconut oil protects against protein loss, which leaves the hair brittle and damaged. It also promotes growth of new hair strands, making your hair appear thicker and more voluminous. Regularly massaging coconut oil into your head will even reduce dandruff and reduce your risk of acquiring lice.
5. Reduce Diabetes
The MCFAs in coconut oil improve insulin sensitivity and help to prevent insulin resistance – a precursor to type II diabetes. Coconut oil helps balance insulin reactions in the cells, promoting healthy digestion and reducing strain on the pancreas. The MCFAs also improve glucose tolerance, regulating blood sugar levels and providing the body with a consistent energy source.

6. Healthy Immune System
The unique MCFAs in coconut oil contain antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. They help to fight against foreign invaders, supporting healthy immune system response. Coconut oil also contains lauric acid, which is known to reduce candida overgrowth the widespread inflammation it creates.
7. Improved Memory
Those amazing MCFAs in coconut oil improve memory and cognition, boosting recall ability and reducing brain fog. The MCFAs are easily absorbed by the body and can be accessed in the brain without the use of insulin. This allows them to fuel the brain more efficiently, improving cognitive function and recollection.
8. Heart Health
Because the fats in coconut oil are considered to be healthy fats, they actually have a positive effect on cholesterol and lipid profile. These MCFAs also reduce blood pressure, lowering the risk of heart disease.
9. Reduce Arthritis
Coconut oil is a high source of antioxidants, which help to reduce inflammation – a root cause of arthritis and joint pain. The MCFAs in coconut oil also support a healthy immune system, reducing over exaggerated immune response that leads to widespread inflammation. Some even report an analgesic effect, with a reduction in pain and improvement in mobility.
Bursting with antioxidants, coconut oil may slow down the aging process. It reduces stress on the liver and lowers oxidative stress. It even supports the body’s natural detoxification processes. When applied topically to the skin, it helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and cellulite. And when consumed on a regular basis, both the aroma and the MCFAs provide a calming and soothing effect.
