I recently discovered pitless avocados and couldn’t wait to do a little more digging. To save shoppers from slicing and dicing their hands during pit removal (a remarkably common problem that ER docs now refer to as “avocado hand”), a British retailer has begun selling pitless avocados. These avocados are an un-pollinated version of this beloved fruit: an avocado “blossom” grown without a seed. These pint-sized fruits have earned the nickname “cocktail avocados.” And, if the pitless center isn’t exciting enough, the skin of the fruit is also edible.
To grow pitless avocados, farmers purposefully avoid cross-pollination.
This small difference in how the farmer chooses to raise the crop is what makes all the difference….just like seedless watermelon and grapes, these seedless avocados are non-GMO! These adorable avocados are just as creamy and delicious as their larger counterparts – without that pesky pit hiding inside.
Here’s the bad news: if you’re ready to get your hands on some cocktail avocados, whip out your smartphone and book a flight to the U.K. These avocados have been around for quite a while, but are only available in high-end English supermarkets and expensive Parisian cuisine. Keep your fingers crossed. With any luck, these little fruits will soon be stateside.
